Bass Players Solo Competition
The 2009 ABP Festival will hold its second Solo Competition.
Now in two categories: Electric Bass solo playing and Double Bass solo playing.
The Electric Solo Competition is sponsored in part by Lance Roederer and Arizona
Music Pro, Inc., of Flagstaff, Arizona. Electric Bass, First Prize: Phil
Jones Flightcase amplifier (worth $1000); Second Prize will be a set of books
and DVD from Rob Wren at Alfred
Publishing. Double Bass, First Prize: Double Bass Bow (Fr. or Grm.) from
The String Shop of Arizona and
Second Prize: Low C Extension (one E stop) from Andrew's
Fine Violins (value $1100), Third prize will be a custom Tailpiece
from Mike Pecanic Music
~ Solo Competition Regulations ~
~ These regulations can/will not be altered after Feb. 18, 2009.
~ The competition is open to all bass players who are current Members of Arizona
Bass Players, Inc., who have registered for all four days (Regular Registration)
of the Arizona Bass Players Festival, 2009, and who are 15 to 22 years of
age at the time of the Competition (March 8, 2009).
~ There is no fee to register for the competition.
~ The competition must be played with accompaniment, if the music requires
it, and may be in solo or orchestral tuning, or other tuning as necessary
for the repertory.
~ If accompaniment is to be provided by ABP or ASU-School of Music, copies
of accompaniment parts must be sent immediately.
~ Repertory Requirements~
DOUBLE BASS:
First Performance Round: The first movement or the third
movement of any concerto originally written for double bass (for example,
Dittersdorf, Bottesini, Vanhal, Hofmeister, Schuller, Hertl, etc.). No transcriptions
of other instrument concertos allowed. Total allowed playing time: 10
minutes. Must be accompanied by piano.
A maximum of three successful candidates will move to Second Performance Round.
Second Performance Round: Any single (1, 2, or 3) movement
of a concerto originally written for double bass (may use First Round choice),
and any one full piece of music originally written for double bass unaccompanied
solo within the period from 1918 to 2009. Total allowed playing time:
18 minutes. Please choose your repertory to meet this playing-time restriction
(example: Dittersdorf Concerto 1st mvt = 8 minutes, Persichetti Parable =
10 minutes for a total of 18 minutes).
